Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
It is found that for practical conditions in reinforced earth structure, an oblique force or a transverse component of force acts along with the axial component of force on reinforcing elements when considering the possible failures of reinforcing elements. Accordingly, it is critical to evaluate the transverse pullout resistance of a reinforcing element. The present invention provides an apparatus for measuring transverse pullout resistance of a reinforcing element

    Abstract:

Applications: Reinforcing elements are generally placed in soil to improve stability and control deformation. Such reinforcing elements improve the shear resistance of the soil thereby improving its structural capability and thus enabling the use of poorer quality soils as structural fill materials. One such reinforcing element recently in practice is classified as geosynthetic and defined as a planar product manufactured from polymeric material used with soil, rock, earth, or other geotechnical engineering related material as an integral part of man-made project, structure, or system. The interaction behavior between soil and reinforcing element is an important key parameter in the design of reinforced soil structures. The stability of these structures relies to a large extent on the proper transference of forces from the soil to the reinforcing element and vice versa. The main mechanisms of this load transference are friction, passive earth resistance and interlock. Depending on the loading and the position of the reinforcement layers, a pullout mechanism could evolve. Pullout resistance is mainly due to frictional resistance and passive resistance, i.e. interlocking, against ribs of reinforcing element. These resistances depend on the shape, gradation, roughness of soil particles, etc. It is found that in practical conditions an oblique force or a transverse component of force acts along with the axial component of force on reinforcing elements when considering the possible failures of reinforcing elements. Accordingly, it is critical to evaluate the transverse pullout resistance of a reinforcing element. The present invention provides an apparatus for measuring transverse pullout resistance of a reinforcing element.
Advantages: Design of reinforced earth structures can be improved by incorporating the transverse pullout resistance of reinforcement in the design of these structures. The transverse pullout resistance can lead to improve the existing design methodology. The realistic design of reinforced earth structures is possible.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
