Conventional construction using concrete requires considerable human intervention, and can be time consuming and difficult to implement in adverse situations. Production of concrete structures through three-dimensional (3D) printing may help overcome some of these challenges. This approach involves layer-wise deposition of concrete without the use of formwork. A layer of printed concrete needs to be strong enough to sustain the weight of layers to be printed above. These strong layers may not bond very well with each other leading to inter-filament and inter-layer voids. These voids are the primary locations for stress concentration leading to reduced strength and poor performance in harsh environments, for e.g., off-shore and on-shore structures. Layers of self-compacting concrete (SCC) can bond well with each other, but may not have the strength to support the weight of layers printed above. Our technology enables the printing of self-compacting concrete (SCC) leading to reduction in inter-junction voids and hence results in enhanced strength and performance.

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
