Thin-film solar cells: Traditionally it is very hard to integrate electronic materials on substrates like steel. Electronic materials often need temperatures > 400C to deposit semiconducting films. At these temperatures, the iron from steel diffuses into the semiconducting overlayer, contaminating it. The contamination is so potent that devices cease to function, preventing use of steel foils for electronic despite advantages like low-cost, functional, strong, and flexible. In this work we demonstrated 3 different type of barrier layers that prevent out-diffusion of iron. These films can enable monolithic integration of electronic devices on steel.

Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
