Please give more details of new technical application area:
We have already synthesized a new five-element alloy (filed a Patent) in the form of a thin films and nanowires by a cost effective, scalable, and single-step method. Based on the fundamental outcomes, these nanowires turned out to be soft-magnetic in nature and are biocompatible as well. Now, the idea of the Team is to explore these novel nanowires in the direction of device-making and biomedical applications as well based on their performance. On successful fabrication/development, these nanowires can be potential candidates and can be alternatives to the existing (with maximum three elements) magnetic materials in the healthcare and electronics, due to their unique combination of five elements with an outstanding stability in terms of oxidation resistance and biocompatibility.
Organization(s):
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad
Affiliated Ministry: Institution Funding (Self Supported)
Type of technology development: Indigenous
Does the technology help in replacing any import items currently
procured from outside India?
Yes
Does the technology have export potential? Yes
Category of Technology developed: Immediate Deployment
Stage of Development: Lab-Scale
Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
TRL Level up to 4 (Component validation in lab environment) Unique five-element thin films and nanowires are already successfully fabricated and are filed for patent as well. These fabricated five-element thin films and nanowires with customized compositions and morphologies can be traded directly. Also, based upon the magnetic and biological properties of ours synthesized thin films and nanowires, our team shall work upon the making of its related sensor devices and for cancer therapy.

    Abstract:

Applications: Research on high entropy alloys/multicomponent alloys are a new category of materials still under progress and these alloys are yet to find their suitable applications. Therefore, exploring new alloy systems are still a major challenge as the existing alloys have their limitations in terms of processing and their scalability in addition to their practical applicability. On the other hand, the existing, conventional metallurgical processes includes several steps, involves high temperatures and takes several hours to days to fabricate as an alloy in bulk form and hence, are expensive. Therefore, through existing conventional methods, utility explorations of multi-component/high entropy alloys having nanostructures like thin films and nanowires for industrial applications, more specifically for electronic and healthcare industries are not feasible at this moment. (i) Our method of fabricating these alloys electrochemically allows us to synthesize and explore new combinations of elements and novel morphologies from bulk thin films to nanowires and other shapes in a single step at room temperature efficiently. (ii) We have synthesized a new combination of five elements as nanowires for the first time in the history of high entropy alloys and the basic characterization of these nanowires have shown their applicability in devices and therapeutics based on its magnetic and biological characteristics. (iii) Ours synthesized particular combination has shown better magnetic properties compared to the commercially available permalloy (two element alloy) and also have shown excellent biocompatibility. (iv) Our idea is to further explore these nanowires for devices and its performance-based applications. Thus, they can be new generation materials for electronics and healthcare industries namely in form of sensors and cancer therapy, which can replace the existing expensive materials for example usage of gold and silver nanoparticles for cancer therapy.
Advantages: Research on high entropy alloys/multicomponent alloys are a new category of materials still under progress and these alloys are yet to find their suitable applications. Therefore, through existing conventional methods, utility explorations of multi-component/high entropy alloys having nanostructures like nanowires for industrial applications, more specifically for electronic and healthcare industries are not feasible at this moment. (i) Product sell of five-element thin films and nanowires to various R&D labs/University Researchers to further explore variety of applications. In the world there exists no companies selling this kind of products and our Team shall be the first one to do so. (ii) Technology transfer/licence sell of the fabricated devices/agents for microelectronics, healthcare and so on. After successful fabrications, our Team shall search for interested manufacturers for its large-scale production.

    Commercialization Potential:

Who are the Potential Licensees? More number of constituents in an alloy generates more combination of compositions in a wide range, bringing out its associated properties in manifolds. Several R&D labs/researchers would like to acquire these nanowires for their research interests in microelectronics, biomedical engineering, etc. To the best of our knowledge, in terms of novelty, we are the first inventors of synthesizing five-element nanowires and can customized five-element alloys with different compositions and morphologies. Therefore, in addition to the proposed idea of making devices and finding its performance-based applications in healthcare, we would also like to sell customized nanowires (with varied compositions and morphologies) to various seekers

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
