If 'Other', please specify:
Veterinary Surgery
Please give more details of new technical application area:
The designer locking plate developed for bovine radius is a contoured bone plate, which can be used for treatment of radial fractures in cattle and buffaloes, especially comminuted diaphyseal fractures, which are otherwise difficult to treat by conventional methods. The technique of application is similar to conventional locking plate fixation using standard technique.

Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
The device has been tested for in vitro mechanical properties and also tested for in vivo application in bovine radius. The design has been patented and is ready for commercialization and large scale production and distribution.

    Abstract:

Applications: Long bone fractures in cattle and buffaloes are quite common, most often not treated effectively leading to prolonged suffering, reduced production and even death of the animal causing heavy economic loss to the livestock owner. Due to prevailing socio-economic and religeous conditions, many a times culling of a fractured animal is not possible in India. As currrently no specific bone plate is available in the market for treatment of radial fractures in large animals, this device can be of great petential. The designer locking plate is useful to effectively treat comminuted unstable fractures in radius bone of cattle and buffaloes. Any veterinary surgeon, who is trained in orthopaedic surgery, in different institutes, veterinary colleges, polyclinics and even at the field level can use this device to treat fractures.
Advantages: No specific bone plate is available in the market for treatment of radial fractures in large animals. Most bone plates available in the market are developed for human patients, which are enough for small animal use, but are inadequate in strength for use in large animals. The newly designed locking plate is well contoured to the bovine radius, hence no need to precontour the plate before surgery, which will reduce the time required for fixation and prevent the weakening of plate strength. The screw holes are arranged in such a way that the screws can be placed in different planes, which will increase the strength of fixation. Two rows of screw holes allow fixation of locking screws in two rows giving double plate fixation effect. The in vitro mechanical studies proved superior strength of designer plate as compared to conventional locking plates.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
