    Abstract:

Applications: Power Hardware in Loop (PHIL) methodology enables the flexible and risk-free testing of physical equipment. In these simulations, part of the system is simulated in a Real-Time simulator, and another part is the actual hardware. An power amplifier is essential to interface the RT simulator with the Hardware under Test. This application requires the power amplifier to have bidirectional power transfer capability. Therefore, conventional power amplifiers cannot be used directly. The work proposed in this document focus on an alternate solution to build a power amplifier with a bidirectional power flow capability. The novelty of the proposed solution is two-fold. At first a novel switched-power sink is incorporated in the PA structure to accommodate reverse power flow. Secondly, a control scheme for the switched power sink is proposed to achieve seamless transfer between the forward and reverse power mode.
Advantages: PHIL simulation is an excellent method to test a device and to study its effects on the distribution system in real time without actually connecting it in a distribution grid. It involves a real time simulation platform in which a standard distribution system is simulated and output of one node is taken out to connect the device. However, to do so we would require an interface between real time simulation system and the device. Proposed switched sink bidirectional power amplifier would be used as this interface to provide the voltage gain at output, supply the required power to the device and feedback the device load characteristics to the simulation platform
