    Abstract:

Applications: The railway sleepers are one of the critical components of the railway operations. The materials traditionally utilized for sleepers are timber, concrete or steel. In the existing arts, the rail fastening systems that are used, damages the railway sleepers as the use of spikes and tools deteriorates the vibration absorption and damping abilities, further reducing the application for high speed operations and during the movement on the rails, develop tension zones at the base, under the rail seats, of the railway sleepers. To overcome these problems a High strength and light weight composite railway sleeper is developed by IIT Delhi to replace the existing timber steel, concrete or composite sleepers. A composite railway sleeper formed from recycled plastic and rubber, more particularly from reinforced fibres, recycled plastic and EoLT Trubber. The objective of the present invention is to devise a composite railway sleeper which, while limiting the pulverisation of the ballast, allows easy and rapid application in work, by means of adopting elastic type fastening system with direct laying type pre-formed at factory which would allow connection of rails to the sleeper without needing unwanted fitting operations and high speed track operations. Key Features: 1. It can be used in various railway systems such as high-speed lines, high capacity lines, conventional lines, metropolitan lines, tram lines and narrow gauge lines, especially on the bridges, culverts and tunnels 2. It provides anti-noise and anti-vibration features 3. Lower vibrations and better damping of structure 4. Excellent durability 5. Efficient in performing high speed operations 6. Sleepers are able to resist biological and chemical attacks.
Advantages: 1. Low maintenance cost 2. It also provides greater safety 3. It poses no/minimal environmental restrictions. 4. It is able to absorb and release the vibrational efforts that the screw receives. 5. It gives strength to lateral displacement in the applications on bridges, culverts, and reduction in pulverisation of the ballast in the ground track lines. 6. It provides higher tear strength and stability.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
