Corrosion in the hydro-treating unit is caused by hydrogen sulphide &/or ammonium sulphide &/or hydrogen chloride &/or ammonium chloride formed during the hydrodesulphurization and dehydrohalogenation. The source of the chloride is organic chlorinated compounds frequently used in the Petroleum exploration and production. The acidic species reacts with iron (Fe) metal to form Fe salts and the metal will leach out from surface. The mechanism of corrosion inhibitors is the formation of a film which can act as a hydrophobic barrier against the above mentioned corrosive species. HP Green R&D Centre has developed hydrocarbon based corrosion inhibitor formulation for hydro-treating units.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
