    Abstract:

Applications: 1.Polypropylene (PP) is one among the commodity polymers. 2.The addition of carbon additives renders the otherwise flammable polymer matrix, to be insulating even at temperature as high as 500 C. 3.This tailor made composite material can be used as construction material for electrical housing and panels, warehouse, industrial and household commodities, bodies of automotive vehicles, electronic equipment such as computer and television body, to provide protection against fire accidents. 4.They are not only insulating in nature but also the presence of SiC provides resistance against burn shrinkage and carbon additives aid in char formation which reduces the burn rate.
Advantages: 1.It is for the first time that the synergistic effect of Silicon Carbide (SiC), Carbon nanotube (CNT) and Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) is corroborated. 2. SiC is a non-oxide ceramic with mainly covalent bonding which imparts oxidation. 3.Reinforced polypropylene composite have been successfully prepared using compression molding. 4.SiC, CNT and GNP retained their structure after compression molding. No structural change or reaction occurred in compression molded product. 5.With the addition of tubular and platelet structured nano-carbon (i.e. CNT and GNP, respectively), 6.reducing the heat transfer from one end to another whereas SiC phase is a highly thermal conducting phase. 7.Development of standard set up for studying the burning behavior of composites in controlled environment.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
