    Abstract:

Applications: The technology developed includes modular accessory for the mobility enhancement of manual wheelchairs by motorizing the manual wheelchair. The accessory includes engaging or disengaging mechanisms to facilitate easy installation and removal of the accessory. The accessory employs a torque enhancing mechanism that allows the usage of a low torque rated motor. The accessory can easily fit various models of commercially available wheelchairs. The modular accessory has an intuitive control mechanism and is non intrusive. The same accessory can be used for other manual products like baby pram, bicycle and shopping mall cart that is driven by human efforts. The mechanism is compact and easy to fit. It uses friction force to provide the driving force to the wheels.
Advantages: The present invention provides a low cost solution for easy movement of elderly and physically challenged people. The modular accessory has been developed in house at IIT Roorkee and retrofitted in the available manual wheelchair. In order to facilitate effortless movement for the 1.5 crores Indians suffering from locomotor disabilities, this project aims to develop a modular attachment for manual wheelchairs. Apart from achieving modularity, the target is to reduce the cost to the customer as compared to existing commercial wheelchairs, by using a reductive approach to design. The product facilitates the easy movement of the elderly and physically handicapped people. The present invention is a cheaper cost product, therefore, higher demand is expected once commercialized. India is importing the mechanized chairs form various developed countries.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
