In present invention, a serpentine miniature reactor is designed and tested for biodiesel production from non-edible oil in reduced time

    Abstract:

Applications: Proposed invention is quite relevant to the researchers and working personnel, who are working in synthesis of alternate fuel and mass transfer limited reactions. Present invention is based on the exploitation of slug flow in serpentine miniature reactors. This type of reactors provides the large interfacial contact by means of internal circulation and diffusion that gives the enhanced transport rate. The biodiesel production using the miniature reactor can be commercialized because reactor operates in continuous mode with reduced time. This reactor can be used at farm side without needed any specialty and much land. Scale-up of reactor can be done by using parallel arrangement of channels for increasing the production rate. Further, any person can handle it because it does not require any special skill.
Advantages: Transesterification reaction to produce biodiesel from non-edible oil is a reversible, and governed by mass transfer limited between the phases. There are two methods to overcome this problem. One method is the use of mixing device to mix the reactant before it could have fed to reactor. Another methodology is by use of micro-channel which are having higher pressure drop and contributes to higher operating cost. In present reactor the enhanced transport rate (heat, mass, and reaction) is achieved in very less time. This reactor increases the interfacial contact of the fluids and reduces the diffusional path to initiate the reaction. Comparing to the existing reactors fabrication of present reactor is much easier.

    Commercialization Potential:

Who are the Potential Licensees? Present invention has a potential to be an added advantage for any industries which involve in biodiesel production from non-edible oil in batch mode. Besides the existing batch unit, the present reactor can be used for the production of biodiesel in continuous mode. Also, new small scale industry for biodiesel production can be set-up by using the present reactor.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
