DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND FLOOD MANAGEMENT, WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Please give more details of new technical application area:
Efficient planning and management of water resources such as dams, water reservoirs, lakes, rivers, irrigation canal etc are of prime importance for a city or state as these are the main water sources available for industries, live stocks, irrigation etc. Efficient management of these resources are also required during the unforeseen natural calamities such as floods, drought etc. The water levels in these water bodies need to be periodically measured and analyzed for effective planning and management of this critical resource. Non contact ultrasonic based level sensors are the most popular sensors used all over the world for water level sensing applications. The level sensors used for measuring the levels of these water resources should be able to operate under extreme weather conditions and hence should be robust, reliable and environment friendly. Although several ultrasonic sensors are available in the market for water level sensing, not many are available which operates reliably in extreme environmental conditions. Most of the ultrasonic sensors available for this purpose are imported from proprietary sources and hence their cost is exorbitantly high. A fully indigenous, innovative ultrasonic water level sensor module, NIRCHHARI which can be used for a wide variety of level sensing applications.

Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
NIRCHHARI is an ultrasonic level sensor solution for the real time remote level monitoring of dams, canals, rivers, lakes, water reservoirs etc. NIRCHHARI measures the level information at periodic intervals and sends the information as SMS or GPRS messages through the inbuilt GSM interface. The module is IP68 compatible and is made up of PVC or POM material suitable for use in chemically corrosive and extreme environments. Protomodel of NIRCHHARI has been deployed in Dam sites and is operational . The TRL level of the product is 7

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
