Chronic Airway Management Tracheomalacia is a condition or incident where the cartilage that keeps the airway (trachea) open is soft such that the trachea partly collapses especially during increased airflow The usual symptom is stridor when aperson breathes out This is usually known as a collapsed windpipe An effective Tracheomalacia management plan includes four components 1 assess and monitor disease 2 reduce risk factors 3 manage stable Tracheomalacia 4 manage exacerbations Tools are required to understand the extent of tracheal collapse for proper intervention.

    Abstract:

Applications: 1.Primarily the tool is designed for pediatric population, however the scope is not limited to a specific age group. The tool extends its usage both for children and adult population seeking medical treatment for chronic airway disease. 2.The tool does not demand for a sophisticated clinical setting. The portable, handheld device extends its application not just for conventional hospital setting but also emergency intubation in an un-controlled setting. 3.Tool administration into the airway resembles that of a convention airway guidewire (Bougie) and hence does not require specialized training. Its utility can be extended irrespective of a clinician’s area of expertise. 4.By understanding the alteration in tissue mechanical property, the mechanism of airway collapse can be better understood. 5.The trauma and complications associated with long duration intubation can be better understood. 6.Knowledge on localized airflow profile across various segments of tracheobronchial tree provides fundamental understanding of the chronic airway anomalies and hence, assists surgeons in decision making and efficient management strategies.
Advantages: 1.The multifunctional, sensor integrated airway management tool will be a first-of-its-kind diagnostic tool developed for monitoring paediatrics with chronic airway obstruction. 2.The airflow patterns generated by the tool can locate the site of obstruction even in challenging airways. 3.The tactile sensors provide an understanding on the mechanical property of the tissue and thus the percentage reduction is tissue stiffness that precipitates to collapse can be better understood. 4.The small dimensions of the tool enable its administration even in severely constricted airway. 5.The invention heralds a new vertical of hand-held diagnostic tool with a potential to accelerate diagnosis time and implement management strategies efficiently, thereby minimizing trauma to the subject. 6.Enables quick decision making in emergency intubation both in a clinical and non-clinical setting. 7.The tool usage does not demand for highly skilled trained medical practitioner.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
