Collaborative : Indian Science Technology and Engineering facilities Map (I-STEM)
Event Brief :
Abstract: High performance computing (HPC) generally refers to processing complex calculations at high speeds across multiple servers in parallel. Hosting such infrastructure needs detailed planning with respect to installation of system, cooling infrastructure and electrical infrastructure. CSIR-Fourth Paradigm Institute hosts the centralized supercomputing facility for the whole of CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research).
Originally installed in 2012, when it was the largest supercomputer in the country and 58th largest in the world, with a computing capability 360 Tera Floating point Operations Per Second (FLOPS).
The system is being refreshed to about 3 Peta-FLOPS computing system in next three months. The newer system uses different cooling mechanism and will also have AI computing capabilities in addition to traditional CPU based computing. This talk will touch upon various complexities and challenges being faced while establishing this facility.
